Sustainability
Newman is strongly committed to continuing our storied history of manufacturing premium paperboard with the highest level of integrity and environmental responsibility.
A History of Environmental Responsibility
For over a century, Newman & Company has been dedicated to practices reducing our carbon footprint, ensuring a better future for our customers, communities, and future generations alike. Our evolving world demands not just creativity, but the ingenuity to rethink our manufacturing process to maximize sustainability.
Deep Dive into CloseD LOOP
At Newman & Company, we strategically source recyclable paper from local and regional channels. Our mill runs on post-consumer material directly from curbside collection, as well as post-commercial and post-industrial generation. Our efficient logistics involve backhauling scrap paper from customers, utilizing our company-owned fleet, optimizing efficiency, lowering costs, and reducing our carbon footprint.
Partnering with United States Recycling (USRI) for waste audits and recycling programs, we divert recyclable material from landfills, ensuring the continuous lifecycle of recycled fiber. Newman remains dedicated to fostering circularity in recyclable commodities through responsible collection and reuse practices.

Water Reuse System
An exciting project is underway, as we are building a massive subsurface basin and water reuse system on our campus. This project will contribute nearly 15 Greened Acres of stormwater management to the local Philadelphia community, reducing over 200,000 gallons/day of fresh water currently supplied by the PWD. Additionally, our mill water closure system ensures no water from the manufacturing process is discharged into the city sewer, instead recycling 100% of our process water.
Protecting Our Forest
Manufacturing recycled paper requires about 40% less energy, compared to paper made from virgin wood pulp. Our manufacturing process uses zero virgin content to produce our high-quality paperboard.
According to the EPA, recycling 1 ton of paper can save 17 mature trees from being cut down through deforestation.
Pallet Recycling
Our in-house pallet program and skid department was designed to provide an effective closed-loop system from an economic and environmental standpoint. Our program uses reverse logistics to optimize material handling and transportation costs.
Over 25,000 wooden pallets are recovered annually by Newman & Company.
Energy & Conservation
We operate a cogeneration facility which simultaneously produces both the electric and thermal load for our paper mill.
